CoventryLive reports that the Sky Blues have made a high-profile deal for a highly regarded Championship defender.
According to reports, Coventry City is "considering a club-record bid" for Charlie Hughes, a highly regarded 21-year-old defender for Hull, after their original £7 million offer was turned down.
Sky Sports News reports that the Sky Blues have informed the Tigers, their opponent in Saturday's Championship opener at the CBS Arena, that they were willing to pay a guaranteed £6 million plus a further £1 million in possible add-ons, but that offer was "rebuffed."
According to the broadcaster, Coventry is now evaluating an enhanced offer of £8 million plus add-ons for Hughes, surpassing the £7.7 million the club paid for Haji Wright in August 2023. This would be a new club-record sum.
The article goes on to say that Hull values its current young player of the season at £10 million and is hesitant to part with a vital member of their first squad, particularly to a rival, especially as the club is now subject to a transfer embargo that prevents them from using the funds to replace him right away. But later today, Hull's appeal against the embargo is scheduled to be heard.
Meanwhile, left-sided centre-back Hughes, who is also desired by former Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles, is valued at an incredible £20 million by Tigers head coach Sergej Jakirovic, who told BBC Humberside Sport: "He's really significant."
Based on my observations thus far, he has the potential to grow even more. If he continues to get better, he might end up being our greatest transfer in our club's history. As of right moment, I am unaware of the record.
He is now worth more than £20 million in my opinion. "Of course, there is our former coach (Ruben Selles)," he responded when asked directly about Sheffield United's connections. He naturally wants Charlie to be there, but there is no possibility.
"I would remain here for one more season if I were Hughes." He possesses every requirement for a contemporary defender. Both good with and without the ball. Everything about the game is good, including the atmosphere. He has an excellent profile. He will be in (with) one of the top five English clubs, based on what I have seen thus far.
