After calling his team's performance in the first half "boring," Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley was happy with how his team ended their 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers.
Colchester United head coach Danny Cowley expressed mixed feelings following his side’s 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers, labelling their first-half performance as “boring” but praising the strong finish.
Cowley was blunt in his assessment of the opening 45 minutes, admitting that the U’s lacked energy and creativity. “We were too passive in the first half,” he said. “It was boring – for us, for the fans, for everyone watching. We didn’t play with the intensity or ambition we demand.”
However, Cowley was far more encouraged by the response after the break. Colchester improved markedly, finding greater rhythm and purpose in possession, and were rewarded with a well-taken equaliser to cancel out Tranmere’s opener.
“The second half was much better,” Cowley added. “We showed more courage, played with tempo and aggression, and created the kind of chances we know we’re capable of. I was pleased with the way we finished – it’s something we can build on.”
The U’s boss also highlighted the importance of character and adaptability as the League Two season edges closer. “It’s still early, and we know there’s plenty to work on, but the players showed they’re willing to respond and improve. That’s key.”
Colchester now turn their attention to their final preparations before the season opener, with Cowley eager to ensure his side starts on the f.ront foot.
