The Gothenburg Fantastic Aberdeen should sign a striker with speed to intimidate defenders, according to John Hewitt.

Before the new season begins, Dons legend Hewitt wants the team to increase their attacking alternatives.

Before the new season begins on Monday, Aberdeen legend John Hewitt thinks the Dons need to increase their attacking potency.

At Tynecastle, the Dons take on Derek McInnes' Jambos to begin their Premiership campaign.

When their loan periods ended at the end of the previous season, attackers Kevin Nisbet and Oday Dabbagh left the Dons, and Australia international forward Kusini Yengi joined on a free transfer from Portsmouth.

Aberdeen has rekindled their interest in AC Milan striker Marko Lazetic, while Dons forward Pape Gueye appears to be close to signing a contract with Turkish team Kasimpasa.

Hewitt thinks at least one more striker can be added to the Dons roster since he feels the team lacks offensive options, particularly if Gueye leaves.

"I don't know a lot about Kusini Yengi, but I'm sure they'll have done their research on him," he remarked.

"I don't think we currently have a goal threat up front, therefore we really need one. "If possible, I'm searching for someone who can score 20 goals for us each season.

"I would like to see a striker with genuine speed who can run in behind and cause defences to struggle."

An Aberdeen legend's enthusiasm for the upcoming season

When Hewitt nodded home the winning goal in the 1983 European Cup Winners' Cup final against Real Madrid, it was the most significant goal in Aberdeen Football Club history.

He told the Press and Journal that he was encouraged by the team's performance in the Scottish Cup the previous season and hoped Jimmy Thelin's team could maintain that level of success in the upcoming campaign.

"They had a great season finale," he added. We need to reassemble and integrate the new players into the team because several of the players left during the summer.

"I still think the team needs more members, but I have no doubt Jimmy will do that. "I'm excited to watch how they perform this season."

The squad will be tested by European football.

When the draw is completed on Monday, the Dons will find out who they will face in this month's Europa League play-off.

Hewitt acknowledges that juggling local obligations with continental play will be difficult for Thelin's team given the certainty of European league games in the near future, either in the Conference League or the Europa League.

"We have seen how difficult it can be in the past," he continued.

"The league is always the bread and butter.

"I know the guys will be focussing more on the league, but a little run in Europe will go down nicely."
