Jamille Matt, a striker for Walsall, has been declared by Mat Sadler to be the team's captain for the 2025–2026 campaign.
In the absence of former captain Donervon Daniels, who left for League Two rivals Oldham Athletic after being released at the end of the previous season, the 35-year-old carried the armband most of the time.
Matt, who signed a new one-year contract earlier this summer, returned as a substitute in Saturday's 3-0 victory over Forest Green Rovers after suffering a minor groin injury.
A new signer Although Brandon Comley and Albert Adomah have both donned the armband during preseason, Aden Flint has been the team's captain from the beginning. "Going forward," Jamille Matt will serve as the team's captain.
In addition to wearing the armband for all three League Two play-off games, Jamille Matt captained Walsall in 33 of their 46 league games during the previous season.
"Jamille will absolutely be our club captain," stated Sadler. It goes without saying that Jamille is an amazing person, and you know what I think of him.
"He will undoubtedly serve as the team's captain, and we'll watch how things unfold on the pitch throughout other games.
It goes without saying that we witnessed Aden [wearing the armband] at Forest Green, and we are thrilled to have his leadership and captaincy.
"We've also got Brandon Comley, Albert Adomah and Charlie Lakin, and some emerging leaders like Connor Barrett, but Jamille will be the club captain moving forward."
Despite struggling for form in the second half of the previous season, Matt scored 12 goals for the Saddlers in all competitions.
With the summer additions of Aaron Pressley from Stevenage and Jonny Stuttle on loan from Bournemouth, the seasoned forward is anticipated to be relied upon less.
Stuttle, 19, has scored twice in as many games as Pressley, who has scored three goals during the preseason.
Sadler is keen for Levi Amantchi to get more playing time away from the team, and last week he left on a six-month loan to Rochdale of the National League.
