Zan Celar, a Slovenian international, has had a challenging start to his English football career, raising questions about his prospects at Loftus Road after the summer transfer window.
Celar made 20 appearances without scoring a goal until finally opening his account with a magnificent double against Cardiff City in November. Celar joined QPR from Swiss team FC Lugano last summer for an unknown price.
"I'm very happy for Zan Celar, he's a big fighter," said Paul Nardi, the R's goalie, after Celar's game-changing performance.
Celar was unable to play for QPR again after early December because of a hamstring injury, despite his stellar 40-goal record in 95 league games for Lugano, where he led the Swiss top-tier scoring statistics in 23/24.
Celar and the rest of QPR's team must remain united for 25/26.
In an exclusive interview with FLW, Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie stressed the value of QPR keeping Celar and maintaining squad depth in anticipation of what he sees as an increasingly competitive season.
"I firmly believe that they should retain as many players as possible. This is a significant season for QPR, in my opinion," Hendrie said.
"I am aware that they have a large number of young players who have been developed into members of the team.
"But, you do feel when you’ve got that little bit of quality, who can produce and score goals you do feel that there’s a possibility that he’ll be one that will be touted out - it’s whether they can keep hold of him," Hendrie stated to FLW.
The former England international acknowledged Celar's potential worth to the team, especially considering his track record of scoring goals at past teams, but also criticised QPR for depending too much on younger players.
Competitiveness warning for the R's in the championship
Hendrie cautioned that clubs hoping to avoid any problems must retain their squads because the second division is expected to get much more competitive the next season.
"I think they need to keep every player they’ve got at the moment and add to the squad, because I think this season in the Championship is going to be a lot more competitive and if they’re not careful by losing big players they can find themselves in a little bit of trouble," he said.
Celar was one of the more high-profile additions to QPR that summer, along with Danish midfielder Nicolas Madsen, who arrived from Belgian club Westerlo.
The team finished 15th in 24/25, just five points above the relegation zone.
The R's have completed four acquisitions this summer, including acquiring Reading's Amadou Mbengue on a free transfer and extending Karamoko Dembele's loan.
Perhaps the best of the lot is Kwame Poku, who was signed by QPR from Macarthur along with the somewhat unknown Australian full-back Kealey Adamson.
According to reports, QPR paid Peterborough United just £900k in compensation for a player who contributed 22 goals (12 goals, 10 assists) across all competitions the previous season.
Since none of these players are older than 24, and Celar is only 26 years old, QPR fans may be particularly thrilled about the possibility that they will all grow together the following season.
Hendrie's counsel to keep quality while adding depth seems wise, and Celar's brief flashes of brilliance indicate the Slovene should be granted more patience as the Championship's reputation as one of Europe's most challenging competitions only gets stronger.
