Instead of pushing the team to overpay, Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth is willing to exercise patience in the transfer market.
With only a few new players, Ainsworth has largely retained the team from the previous year, although he still hopes to recruit a few more.
He stated, "We've gotten in touch with a lot of different players and agents." Clubs charge exorbitant fees, while players demand exorbitant salaries.
"[Owners] Brad and Shannon [Galinson] are wonderful individuals who participate completely in the hiring process.
"We will not acquire players at the expense of the structure or budget that I wish to establish for Gillingham Football Club.
"They have appointed me manager because I want to lead this team and this situation. We're undoubtedly interacting with individuals, which is something I believe every club does.
"Players and agents still have some irrational expectations at this point in the year.
They begin to appear somewhat more realistic as you approach the window's finish.
That could take some time. Late in the windows, I've made some of my best signings. It's incredible; within the first two or three weeks, some players that you never thought would be accessible become available.
They are dissatisfied, and people want to steal them from all over the place.
We'll definitely receive bids for a few of our players. Right now, we're content with our current situation.
Because of his managerial responsibilities, Ainsworth has significant influence over who joins and leaves the team, ensuring that no new players are brought on board without his ultimate consent.
The Gills have added loan player Andy Smith as a permanent member and signed attackers Seb Palmer-Houlden and Sam Vokes since the end of the previous campaign.
"I'm not interested in having a large squad," Ainsworth stated. It all comes down to managing, and I'm content with every player on the team right now.
Some players may think, "You know what, I need to go out and play somewhere else," if we do add players to the team. This is a common occurrence in football.
Right now, everyone is on board, and the guys are fantastic.
"We'll see where it goes, but I really want one or two more in, new faces. We're putting in a lot of effort, but once more, we won't overpay at the expense of this team.
Asking Brad and Shannon to continue doing that is unfair.
"I will accept responsibility for the situation since I was appointed as a manager to handle it."
"People claim that there aren't many fresh faces, but in my opinion, Andy Smith is one. We have the young boy coming through, Damien Theodore, Sam Vokes, and Seb Palmer-Houlden.
The preseason is going really well for Harry Waldock, [Harry] Webster, and [Harry] Bridle. These players are skilled.
We have a strong core here, although Logan Dobbs is just out due to injury. We have some talented young players, and I'm eager to watch how they perform this season.
Despite having plenty of players in most positions, the Gills are still considering trialist Lenni Cirino for left-back.
Max Clark on the left and Remeao Hutton on the right are the only full-backs without many senior players pressing for their spots.
"He's done well over the two weeks he's been here," Ainsworth said of Cirino.
Some athletes are aware that their careers are only getting started. Some people are desperate to start their jobs, while others are aware of where they are in their careers.
"Max has clearly played the last nine games for me last season and held up really well, and Shadrach Ogie can play left-sided."
