McKenna: I Understand the Reasons for the Play-Off Expansion Idea

Kieran McKenna, the town manager, says he understands the reasoning behind the plan to expand the Championship play-offs to six clubs.

Former Crystal Palace and Bristol City CEO Phil Alexander, who is currently the National League's interim CEO, started the effort, which Preston North End CEO Peter Ridsdale has revived.

With the fifth-finishing squad hosting the eighth-place team and sixth at home to seventh in one-off games, the proposal essentially mirrors the format of the National League playoffs.

In contrast to the National League, which has one-off games all season, the victors would then face the third and fourth teams in two-leg semifinals prior to the Wembley final.

McKenna, who has not yet participated in the playoffs as a manager, stated, "I've only seen that this afternoon."

"I understand; it kind of goes beyond that. However, if you consider the Championship's recent seasons, how teams can go up and down the league with a run, and how close the bottom has been, I think it's extremely competitive anyhow.

Although the clubs at the top have scored a lot of points during the past one or two seasons, there is no assurance that this trend will remain indefinitely.

"There's no denying that it's already one of the most competitive divisions in world football, and even returning to it makes you realise that while you watch the other teams and the other games."

No matter how big or small your budget is, you can still get strong players in the Championship because there isn't much of a difference between the teams. It's among the most cutthroat industries in the world.

You can understand the reasoning behind it, but extending it to give a few more teams something to fight for in the final few games will likely put it in more danger at the end.

" So, if it were up to him, he would approve? "I would need to give it some more thought."
