EXCLUSIVE: Jim Goodwin targets Barnsley attacker Max Watters as Dundee United makes a move for him

The 26-year-old Watters might be United's next addition.

Max Watters, a striker for Barnsley, is nearing Dundee United's loan grab.

The 26-year-old Watters joined the Oakwell team in January 2023 and has since made 84 appearances, tallying 14 goals and seven assists. The agile, 6'1" striker recently scored in a friendly match against Rangers at St George's Park in Burton, but he is not included in the starting lineup for the Tykes as he enters the final year of his contract.

Since Zac Sapsford is now the sole  healthy striker for United ahead of their European curtain-raiser against UNA Strassen on Thursday, manager Jim Goodwin has made no secret of his desire to add striking reinforcements to his squad.

Jort van der Sande and Owen Stirton will increase Goodwin's options in the last third once they bounce back from their minor knocks. However, United wants to hire Watters before the team registration deadline for the Strassen match on Friday.

Watters, a schoolboy England international, gained notoriety in non-league football by playing for teams like Ashford United, Thurrock, and Barking.

Doncaster Rovers took notice of his achievements. Prior to a permanent move to Crawley Town, where he established himself with 16 goals in 19 games for the League Two team in 2020–21, he had formative loans with Grantham Town, Gainsborough Trinity, Mickleover Sports, and Maidstone United.

Watters was sent on loan to MK Dons and then Barnsley after scoring just once in 22 games, but earning another move to Cardiff City.
