Perry, Colchester's latest recruit, suffered an ACL injury.

Ben Perry, a midfielder for Colchester United, is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a significant knee injury.

The 20-year-old sustained additional knee injuries and tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) early in last Saturday's 2-0 victory over Shrewsbury Town.

After joining the U's from Nottingham Forest last month for an undisclosed price, it was only his fourth appearance for the team.

Manager Danny Cowley told BBC Essex, "We've received the terrible news that he's torn both his medial knee ligaments and his ACL."

"There's definitely some internal damage there, so that will mean an op, which will rule him out for the season."

Due to injury, Colchester is also missing attacker Will Goodwin and defender Ellis Iandolo. They hope to recruit additional players before the transfer window closes.

"When you lose three key players, it's going to hurt and the team is going to suffer," Cowley said.

The U's have five points from their first four League Two games after losing to Cambridge United at home on Tuesday.

"If you look at it with context, you see a group that worked really hard against a heavyweight in this division, a really good team," Cowley stated.

"We carried them the entire distance. If you consider the (takeover) uncertainties we experienced during the summer, our restricted financial resources, and the three major injuries, you'll see why we believe we did a lot of things well."

Colchester's next game is on Saturday against Barrow at home.
