Barnsley's desire to sign Southampton forward Dom Ballard this summer has been revealed by Conor Hourihane.
The Tykes were one of the teams reportedly considering a move for the 20-year-old earlier this week.
The youthful player made 35 appearances in League One during his two loan stints with Blackpool and Cambridge United last season, netting three goals.
According to reports, Ballard is currently drawing interest from Reading, Barnsley, Plymouth Argyle, and Leyton Orient, where he previously spent a season on loan in 2023–2024.

Ballard is a name being explored behind the scenes at Oakwell as the team attempts to bolster their offensive options, according to Hourihane.
He has, however, also disclosed that the Tykes have alternative choices, suggesting that a trade with Southampton is far from finalised. Through The Yorkshire Post, Hourihane stated,
"He is a name that has popped up over the last few days."
"Whether it's Dom or someone else, we're looking to expand the team.
"A name has been floated regarding Dom, and he has been talked about.
Time will tell if it is completed or not, but he is a terrific age and asset.
However, it is true that he has been discussed.
The summer business of Barnsley Since announcing Hourihane's formal appointment as manager at the beginning of the summer, Barnsley has added several players.
Reyes Cleary, Patrick Kelly, David McGoldrick, and Tennai Watson were all acquired by the team.
Caylan Vickers, Murphy Cooper, and Nathanael Ogbeta have also been loaned to the League One team. Barnsley's next game is a trip to AFC Wimbledon on August 23. This season, the team hopes to return to the Championship.

Hourihane's team may be able to compete for automatic promotion this year by adding a forward who can provide a few goals.
They will have competition for his signing, and it's encouraging that other options are being considered in case they lose out, but if they can complete this transaction, it might turn out to be a wise choice.
