In the last ten or eleven days of the summer transfer market, Coventry City is still working hard to add players while trying to retain its finest players.
With the Sky Blues having not added any new players in nearly a month since goalkeeper Carl Rushworth joined on loan at the end of July after full-backs Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Miguel Angel Brau arrived in June, supporters are growing more anxious and worried about the lack of action thus far.
Frank Lampard, who continues to maintain tabs on the club's transfer activity in accordance with owner Doug King's demands, responded, "There's nothing to the report," when asked if there had been any movement in terms of new signings in his weekly transfer question.
"Well, it's such a hard thing because this part of the window is, you know...,"
the head coach said when pressed by CoventryLive on the topic and asked if he is still calm, hopeful, or confident that he will get what he wants in terms of numbers and positions before the September 1 deadline..
Although everyone is obviously playing the same game, it is my responsibility to be actively involved. In addition to wanting players, people also don't want to lose them.
Therefore, I will never be able to provide you with direct answers. Regarding that, I'm not being overly protective.
Lampard has made no secret of the fact that he is looking for a new center-half to replace Luis Binks. City has already made bids for Luke Woolfenden of Ipswich and Charlie Hughes of Hull, and this week it was reported that the team had made a bid for Fulham winger Martial Godo, indicating that he also wants to bolster on the left flank.
"I'm pleased with how we're practicing and playing," he continued.
Would I like to assist the team in building a good team for the upcoming season? Yes, I believe that's what we all want to do. Therefore, it's as easy as that: if we can, we will.
While Milan van Ewijk has been prominently connected to interest from Besiktas and Wolfsburg, the club is also believed to have received proposals from Southampton for Jack Rudoni and Sheffield United for centre-back Bobby Thomas.
Lampard, however, reaffirmed his position about possible departures and implied that the aforementioned players are content at the CBS Arena, saying:
"We want to keep our best and strongest players and I hope they want to stay here." And it seems like the guys are having fun going to work. That's how I truly feel as a group.
And we can and should add to it if we can, and we will if it is appropriate for us. And it's crucial because, if you remember successful clubs from the past, like Leeds last season or Ipswich two years ago, they had depth in every element of their squads, which is reasonable given the issues that will arise from fitness.
"We all want to try to get the squad in the best place, and I'm very aware of that."
For the 2025–2026 season, Sky has lowered the cost of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle by £192, giving subscribers access to almost 1,400 live Premier League, EFL, and other fixtures. This season, Sky plans to broadcast at least 215 live Premier League games, with the possibility of an additional 100.
In response to a question about whether it's reasonable to assume that Dean Austin and Doug King are putting in a lot of effort behind the scenes to close agreements, Lampard laughed, "No, no we're just chilling!"
"Dean and his team put in a lot of work, and I know that outside opinions can float," he continued. Dean, Doug, and I are all geniuses, and you can have a terrific run of games. And then we're all fools if there's a bad spell.
However, the truth is that Dean and his staff put in a great deal of work, and I must admit that this has been the case ever since I started. And because I knew Dean in the football world—not very well, but as a player—I am somewhat aware of it. He was a tough player who made the most of his career, therefore he wants to bring the greatest player quality to Coventry when he works there for us.
"The owner is also very passionate about the club and wants the best, and I definitely share that." Additionally, I notice a lot of things because I work on the training pitch every day. Since I want to have the finest team possible and a group that can withstand a season, it is my responsibility to try and push for the best squad. And we're all working towards my goal of having the most resilient, thrilling, and entertaining squad that wins games. That is beyond a shadow of a doubt.
However, the head coach acknowledged that clubs like Coventry may have challenges due to expensive fees and wages. He stated, "It's not easy because there are teams in this league that may be parachute teams and have a lot more money to spend than us."
In terms of prices and salaries, we won't necessarily be among the finest clubs, but we must battle against that and each do our best in our individual jobs.
"Perhaps, but maybe every situation is different because some teams will want to keep their players and maybe they don't want to keep their players, or we want to keep our players or we don't want to keep our players," he said in response to the final question about whether the market becomes more challenging as the window draws to a close and transfer fees rise as teams become more desperate to get players in. And as the window closes, that certainly gets a little more intense.
