Former U's: A former Colchester United loanee scores for the League One team for the first time

PRIOR Michael Forbes, a Colchester United loanee, has joined Northampton Town of League One on a season-long loan from West Ham United.

The 21-year-old defender will now play at Sixfields for the 2025–2026 season after his loan stint with the U’s terminated early last season due to a hamstring injury.

On Saturday, Forbes scored his first goal for Northampton in a 3-1 loss to Wigan Athletic. "Michael is a player I have known for a long time," Northampton manager Kevin Nolan stated on the team's website.

"When I was there, he played for West Ham's youth squad. I am aware of his abilities and the heights he can achieve.

"He had some terrible luck the previous season, but now that he's back, we think we can give Michael the platform he needs to grow and succeed. "We think we can help him get back to playing international football and achieve the levels we know he is capable of."

We are appreciative that West Ham United trusted us with Michael. We are developing a strong bond, and we believe that Michael's stay with us will be advantageous to everyone.

"Michael's signing is a part of our strategy to strengthen in all areas, as we stated earlier in the week."

Near the close of the January transfer window in 2025, Forbes moved from West Ham to Colchester on loan.

However, after returning to West Ham and having surgery, he did not play a match for Colchester during his loan after rupturing his hamstring during an in-house training match.

Former United States: Former United defender joins League One team Defender Forbes had been on loan at Bristol Rovers for the first part of the season before joining Colchester last season.

However, a hamstring injury ended his time at the League One team.

The Northern Ireland international made 12 games for the Pirates, including two starts and seven League One matches.

Forbes joined West Ham's academy in the summer of 2020, and two years later, he got his first professional contract.

In the 2023–2024 season, he reached a new agreement with the Hammers that would last until June 2026.
