According to reports, League One team Wigan Athletic is currently the front-runner to sign the 25-year-old centre back Dion Sanderson, who is on the verge of leaving Birmingham City.
After two tumultuous seasons at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, Sanderson is reportedly nearing a move away from the team, according to Football League World.
Prior to being loaned to Blackburn Rovers in January, where he made 12 appearances, Sanderson made just seven appearances in the first half of the previous season.
For a brief period, he shared Ewood Park with former Blues manager John Eustace, who eventually assumed leadership of Derby County, another team that had been connected to the defender. Although there was interest from abroad as well, Wigan Athletic presently appears to be in the lead to sign him. Whether the move will be a loan or a permanent transfer is still up in the air.
Prior to making the move permanent in 2023, Sanderson, a once highly regarded prospect, first joined Birmingham on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. After Harlee Dean left, he made 97 appearances over four seasons and was named club captain, a choice that caused controversy among supporters.
However, a combination of poor performances and off-field problems caused Sanderson's fortunes to decline. He was accused of driving under the influence in April 2024, which resulted in his losing the captaincy for the season's last two games. On the last day of the season, Birmingham was relegated to League One as a result of their difficulties.
The subsequent summer additions of Ben Davies and Christoph Klarer pushed Sanderson farther down the hierarchy. He struggled to earn Chris Davies' faith due to a mix of injuries and lacklustre play, and it now appears like his departure is inevitable.
After four years of ups and downs, leadership responsibilities, and eventually unmet potential, Sanderson's departure would signal the end of his time with Birmingham City. A new beginning seems to be the wisest course of action for the player and the organisation.
