Bolton Wanderers manager on Barnsley's and John McAtee's performance

versus Wanderers, Steven Schumacher hopes that John McAtee's crucial late goal versus Barnsley will help him regain his best form.

After a gruelling second half of battling against ten men, the striker's goal in the 86th minute at Oakwell broke a five-month scoring drought and salvaged a draw.

Schumacher acknowledges that McAtee's performances in front of goal diminished after his last goal occurred in the 3-2 loss to Bristol Rovers in March.

He told The Bolton News, "John McAtee is a confidence player, that's exactly what he is."

He was outstanding for the first eight or ten games when we joined the team at the end of January, wasn't he?

"He was excellent; he scored six goals." Goals dwindled towards the conclusion of the season, so if you don't score as a forward or striker, you probably start to worry.

"However, I'm happy for him because he was in the proper position from a set-piece and he flicked it in front of the goalie, which was fantastic."

Despite having 17 attempts on the Barnsley goal, Wanderers were unable to score in the second half.

Just before the Tykes were reduced to ten men, midfielder Vimal Yoganathan was handed a second yellow card by David McGoldrick, giving them something to hold onto.

We're happy with that, Schumacher said, adding that "I thought from our attacking set pieces we looked very dangerous again and obviously got the goal at the end from one."

"We're a little sad that we were unable to find that one significant opportunity to score three points in the end.

With the header he flicked wide, Macca has very likely got the greatest one. "I don't believe we played at our greatest level, perhaps not as well as we did in the first three games where we made a lot of decisions. Even in the first minute, Amario (Cozier-Duberry) had a touch where he simply overran it a little.

At times, we were a little behind and passive. Although he has been excellent, a goal in the first minute would result if he gets that right.

Even though we weren't playing at our best, it's encouraging to have as many shoots on goal and on target as we did. The keeper made a fantastic save, we hit the post, and one was cleared off the line.

Schumacher, who was quite critical of his team's performance on the day after they lost 4-1 to Barnsley last season, believed that the team was moving in a more positive path with the steel displayed in South Yorkshire.

He claimed that this year's performance was very different and that it also came against a more formidable Barnsley squad.

In contrast, we didn't perform the fundamentals well when we arrived here last year.

We didn't play the ugly side of the game or compete. I thought we did today. We did compete, and we had excellent duel percentages.

However, we lacked the clinical advantage necessary to capitalise on our significant opportunities. "As I say, we can live with that, I can accept it, and we move on."
