Lewis Neilson, a former Dundee United defender, joins Falkirk for the 2025–2026 campaign.
For the 2025–2026 season, Falkirk has signed Hearts defender Lewis Neilson on loan. Manager John McGlynn, who guided the team to multiple promotions to the Scottish Premiership, said he was thrilled to have Neilson on board.
The 22-year-old left Riccarton for his second stint at Falkirk after missing both of Hearts' preseason games in Spain last week. When he was seventeen, he played there while on loan from Dundee United.
Neilson is getting up for a pivotal season in his career as his contract at Tynecastle Park is set to end in the summer of 2026.
We've had our eye on Lewis for a while, and he meets a lot of our requirements, so I'm thrilled to have him in," McGlynn told the Falkirk website.
He's played a lot of games, especially in the Premiership, and has a lot of experience for a player only 22 years old. He started at Dundee United before joining Hearts and going on loan to Falkirk, Partick Thistle, and St Johnstone last season.
"I believe he can improve us, he has a lot of football ahead of him, and it's a good opportunity for him to continue growing." Lewis is a terrific addition, and I'm excited to collaborate with him this season.
This season, Hearts' core defence is more competitive than it has been in years. In addition to Michael Steinwender, Craig Halkett, Frankie Kent, Jamie McCart, Stephen Kingsley, and Harry Milne, head coach Derek McInnes brought in Stuart Findlay on loan from Oxford United. Neilson is therefore surplus to requirements.
Hearts confirmed the player's move in a statement. "Lewis Neilson has joined Falkirk on loan," it said. Subject to Scottish FA approval, the defender will play at Falkirk Stadium during the 2025–2026 season.
Lewis, 22, returned to the Jambos in January after spending the first part of the previous season on loan at St Johnstone. After leaving Dundee United in June 2022, he would go on to make seven games in maroon, bringing his total number of Hearts appearances to 23. At Falkirk, everyone at the club wishes Lewis the best.
There are six new Hearts transfers so far, and there will be more.
Neilson signs loan deals for the 2025–2026 season alongside his Hearts teammates Liam McFarlane and Macaulay Tait. The 20-year-old goalkeeper McFarlane concluded a season-long loan to Alloa Athletic on Monday, after the departure of teenage midfielder Tait to Livingston last month. He will routinely practice with the first team squad at Riccarton, but his move is intended to offer him additional first-team experience.
As McInnes attempts to cut back on players, those won't be the last exits from Hearts. So far, six new players have joined: Scottish centre-back Findlay, Belgian striker Elton Kabangu, Irish midfielder Oisin McEntee, Portuguese striker Claudio Braga, Norwegian right-back Christian Borchgrevink, and Greek winger Alexandros Kyziridis.
Wingers Sabah Kerjota and Pierre Landry Kaboure are both in the process of joining the Edinburgh team, and striker Lawrence Shankland is returning on a three-year deal. They may be in place by the start of Saturday's Premier Sports Cup match against Dunfermline Athletic once they arrive in Gorgie for medicals this week.
