Reserves handily on Friday night at the Salford Community Stadium, continuing their pursuit of a first Reserves Grand Final berth.
Salford's mistake and a penalty put the Wolves deep in the Red Devils' half, and a long ball from scrum half Ewan Irwin found winger Frank Sergent in space, who slid over in the right corner. Four minutes later, Irwin's long kick down field and a fantastic chase forced Salford into a goal line drop out, from which Irwin found full back Zack Gardner linking into the line and passing on to centre Charlie Walker, who sliced through the line to score on the right. The conversion was added by Irwin.
Soon after, a superb "drop off" ball from Joe Hickey found second row, and the Wolves were defeated once more. He and Oliver Bishop scored on the left after a powerful run that saw them brush off three defenders. Irwin scored, but shortly before the half ended, Salford scrum half Sean Murray's high kick on the final tackle was mishandled in their own in-goal area by the Wolves, and centre Dylon Braddish jumped on the loose ball to score on the right against his old team.
Shortly after, the Wolves resumed their attack, and Lucas Green, a loose forward, feed Hickey, who slipped a short ball to Duffy, who pushed his way across on the left. A beautiful ball from substitute Isaac Reid's dummy half found Hickey, who cut out two Red Devils defenders with his long ball before winger Lachlan Webster gathered and squeezed over in the left corner shortly before the half. Irwin then scored.
The Wolves scored again after more excellent play when Hickey passed to Duffy from a scrum 25 metres out. Duffy raced through the line and scored wide out on the left, giving the Wolves a 30–4 halftime lead. However, they ended the half with twelve men after substitute Charlie McKler was harshly sin binned two minutes before the half for allegedly using his shoulder during a tackle attempt.
Reid picked up the lost ball and found Hickey, who booted cross field for Webster to gather and score on the left, as the Wolves, still trailing numerically, forced a mistake by the Red Devils on their own ten-meter line seven minutes into the second half. Four minutes after Irwin's goal, Sergent was the first to react, hacking the ball on and Irwin picking it up to score on the right after Irwin's deft kick behind the Salford defence. To his own attempt, Irwin added the conversion.
Salford refused to give up, and they were rewarded on the hour when James Shields, a loose forward, crashed over on the left from close range after hooker Finley Yates had found him with a short ball.
Twelve minutes later, Wolves substitute Oliver Morgan found Gardner, who dribbled past five defenders to go over on the left after standoff Rhyley Hyde had scored from a scrum twenty meters out. The conversion was added by Irwin.
Morgan found prop forward Tom McKinney at speed on the final tackle, and he smashed over three defenders to score from ten meters out on the left two minutes from time, giving the Wolves their ninth try. The Wolves won 54-10 thanks to a conversion from Irwin.
"It wasn't a great spectacle - the game was stop-start due to the greasy conditions and very slow speed of the ruck," remarked Ryan O'Brien, head coach of Wolves' youth and reserves. However, we performed professionally, and we anticipate what will be really difficult challenges in the latter part of our season.
