Scottish transfers: Rangers "pull out" of £7 million trade, Celtic transfer "not closed," and Dundee United "explore" move

Scotland Under-21 international Marc Leonard will be permitted to leave Birmingham City this summer, despite playing a key role in the Blues’ record breaking EFL League One title success last season. Before being signed by Brighton in 2021, the 23-year-old spent four years in the Hearts development system as a teenager. He spent two years on loan at Northampton Town, where he won the player of the year award, after failing to establish himself in the Seagulls first team.

The Glasgow-born midfielder signed a four-year contract with Birmingham last summer after making an impression for the Cobblers for an unknown price. He later made 35 appearances, contributing to the Midlands team's 111 points in the English third division. Birmingham is reportedly "open" to letting Leonard leave this summer, despite his performances from the previous campaign, informing Huddersfield Town and MLS clubs of his availability.

Dundee United "considers" making a move.

 
After Allan Campbell's brief stint with Dundee United last season, head coach Jim Goodwin is considering a contract to bring the midfielder back to Tannadice on a "long-term" basis. SportsBoom reports that Goodwin is "examining the possibility" of a long-term contract with the former Motherwell player, although he is up against fierce competition from his old team, Millwall.

After being let go from his contract at Luton Town, Campbell first joined Dundee United in January. The player was given a short-term contract by Goodwin that ended at the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season, although there was no option for an extension. To persuade the one-cap Scotland international to commit to a longer stay in the top flight, the Tannadice team is reportedly "preparing" a new offer.

The Aberdeen star is "in talks."

 
Vicente Besuijen, a winger for Aberdeen, is reportedly moving to Europe and is getting closer to leaving Pittodrie. The Dons are reportedly negotiating a loan agreement with HJK Helsinki for the Dutch winger, with a buyout option reportedly part of the agreement.

Even though Jimmy Thelin's team won the Scottish Cup at Hampden in May, the former ADO Den Haag player only played in 11 league games the previous season. Due to a knee ailment he had in December, he had to have surgery to address it during the second part of his season. Now that he is fully recovered, Besuijen might have played his last Aberdeen game, as the team is open to letting him go this summer.

The Celtics agreement is "not closed."

According to the player's agent, Celtic has not yet made an offer for summer transfer target Michel-Ange Balikwisha, even though rumours over the weekend suggested a deal was almost finalised. The Antwerp winger has been linked with a move to the Scottish champions since January, and reports in Belgium claimed a move was getting closer as Celtic look to strengthen their attacking options.

Luis Palma and Marco Tilio are expected to spend the season on loan at Lech Poznan and Austria Vienna, respectively, and Brendan Rodgers is looking for a winger after letting Nicolas Kuhn join Como FC earlier this month. Benjamin Nygren, a Swedish international, cost £1.2 million to sign, but the head coach of the Hoops wants to expand his possibilities.

"Michel-Ange is not closed to the idea of joining Celtic, but the club [Celtic] would still have to come forward," the player's agent Jibril Rekkab told the Daily Record, seemingly confirming that no formal bid has been made for the 24-year-old. There are no talks in progress. Lewis Dobbie, a former Celtic youth, was released from the team at the end of the previous season and has since completed a free transfer to East Kilbride. Last season, the 19-year-old scored 13 goals in the Lowland League.

Rangers "pull out" of the agreement
While negotiations over the transfer were "moving forward" over the weekend, Rangers have "pulled out" of a £7 million deal for Liverpool left-back Owen Beck. The Welsh defender was reportedly a target for Rangers this summer, and head coach Russell Martin was prepared to compete with Wrexham for the 22-year-old.


Beck, who was crowned Blackburn Rovers' player of the year last season after a similar move to Ewood Park, is anticipated to be available for sale this summer, with his Anfield first team opportunities said to be a premium. Beck made an impression when on loan at Dundee during the 2023–24 season.

According to the report, Rangers was willing to spend about £7 million to acquire Beck, and as recently as Sunday night, the Glasgow powerhouses were moving forward with the deal. However, Liverpool held out for a cost that was closer to £10 million, thus the Gers have now backed out of the agreement. It is now anticipated that Beck will sign a season-long loan with Derby County.

Meanwhile, winger Ross McCausland is poised to be embroiled in a transfer tug-of-war following interest in the player from Aris Limassol. According to Sky Sports, Basel, Leuven, and Cincinnati are interested in the 22-year-old, but Aris has initiated contact. They are trying to get the Northern Ireland international to sign a loan agreement.
