Following Diogo Jota's passing, Stoke City has joined the football community in expressing its sympathies to Liverpool.
At just after midnight on Thursday morning, Jota and his brother André were murdered in an automobile accident in Spain when their vehicle veered off the road in the province of Zamora.
Less than two weeks ago, the 28-year-old forward, who was a father to three children, wed his long-time wife, Rute Cardoso. André also played football professionally for Penafiel, a team in the second division of Portugal.
Jota has just assisted Portugal in winning the Nations League and Liverpool in winning the Premier League.
Liverpool released the following statement this morning: "The terrible death of Diogo Jota has devastated Liverpool Football Club.
The club has been notified that the 28-year-old and his brother, Andre, died in a car accident in Spain.
"As they attempt to cope with an unfathomable loss, Liverpool FC will not be commenting further at this time and ask that the privacy of Diogo and Andre's family, friends, teammates, and club employees be respected. We're going to keep giving them our whole support."
Jota became a hugely popular figure on the terraces and in the Anfield dressing room after joining Liverpool from Wolves in 2020.
He won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup while playing for Liverpool, where he scored 65 goals in 182 games. In 2018, he and Wolves also won the Championship title.
"The thoughts of everyone at Stoke City are with Diogo’s family, friends, and everyone at Liverpool Football Club at this incredibly difficult time," Stoke wrote in a letter to Liverpool.
At Anfield this morning, Liverpool fans have been placing tributes. Cristiano Ronaldo, a teammate for Portugal, stated:
"It's not logical. You recently got married, and we were on the same national team. Diogo and André, rest in peace. You will be missed.
