A week before the season begins, Dons still don't have a strong physical presence.

 

Warne desires a little more muscle on his side.

Paul Warne is keen to address the areas that Stevenage's physical style of play during their match against MK Dons revealed. 

 After Saturday's 2-1 loss, the Dons head coach declared, "They're monsters, they're a big side," adding that he doesn't think his team has yet to embrace physicality.

Earlier in the week, Warne stated that Alex Revell's team had revealed his desire to have a more physical presence to lead the line.

There is a notable lack of physicality, especially in midfield and central defence, even if manager Johnnie Jackson has overseen some tidy business in the transfer market, including a few interesting technical players. 

 Last season, Wimbledon was frequently harassed during games, and preliminary indications from preseason friendlies indicate that the problem has not yet been fixed. 

 The Dons have found it difficult to dominate second balls or establish themselves aerially in games against stronger opposition. 

 They have frequently been second-best in the hard-fought matches that are so frequently crucial in League Two, despite occasional displays of attacking flare.

The midfield is still a problem. Although there is inventiveness, there isn't a definite enforcer in the style of Alex Woodyard or Anthony Hartigan, two players who could disrupt play and establish authority.

 Leadership and grit appear lacking at the back as well, particularly with young defenders still growing and no dominant center-half signed to take the position of former mainstays. 

 In recent interviews, Jackson has acknowledged that the team is still looking to add more "physical and experienced" players. Time is running limited, though, and it's always risky to integrate new players just a few days before the opener.

Fans of AFC Wimbledon have witnessed enough campaigns fail because of soft underbelly and poor game management. 

 The Dons run the risk of losing important games if their roster isn't more physically balanced.

 Wimbledon will need to get tougher—and fast—if they are to make a significant run this season. The league doesn't wait for anybody.
