Following a rather dismal 2024–25 season finale, Walsall has begun this campaign in distinctly mediocre form. However, a regrettable injury has given them the opportunity to alter their roster, which could provide them a boost.
Stuttle Returns to Bournemouth, Signing an Exciting Replacement
Jonny Stuttle, a young striker who was just beginning his English Football League career after an outstanding time with Farnborough, has returned to his parent club, AFC Bournemouth, following an injury that will keep him out of action for a "lengthy spell."
Despite playing in all five of the Saddlers' games, he did not score any goals during his brief time there.
Since the Staffordshire-based team has the third-lowest anticipated goals of any side in the fourth division, goal scoring and creating opportunities have been major issues for Walsall as a whole.
Due to Stuttle's injury, Mat Sadler signed Daniel Kanu from Charlton Athletic as a replacement up front. The team announced on their official website that Kanu would be joining the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium on a season-long loan.
Kanu has been around for a while, even though he is only 20 years old. In the 2021–2022 season, he made his Addicks debut.
The next season, he played 14 games across all competitions and scored his first goal in men's football. When the Lambeth native was on loan at Southend United in 2023, he truly made an impression.
He was called up by the Addicks to join their first team squad after scoring an incredible four goals in just six National League games.
Kanu scored six goals in the third division during his 30 league games for Charlton in 2023–2024. The striker only scored once in 17 league games last season and struggled to find playing time.
But once Nathan Jones' team defeated Leyton Orient in the League One playoff final, he was able to obtain a promotion on his resume.
At Walsall, where will Kanu fit in? The Sierra Leone international should have plenty of chances to play because Sadler has so far used a two-striker formation.
Prior to his injury, Stuttle had started every league game with Aaron Pressley. However, given the Saddlers' goal-scoring difficulties, it would be intriguing to see if the Walsall boss chooses to start a more seasoned frontman like Albert Adomah or Jamille Matt.
The two players listed above, and particularly Matt, who has played strike all of his career and scored a lot of goals in the fourth division, should teach Kanu a lot.
The 20-year-old could become one of League Two's most dangerous frontmen if he is handed a regular starting role in Walsall's squad.
