From the Archives | A Declaration of Purpose

Both Swindon and Shrewsbury supporters will remember the 2011–12 season for a very long time because both teams were promoted to League One at the end of the season.

Both teams were preseason favourites going into the season. Graham Turner's team was hoping to advance further than the previous season, when we lost in the play-offs after missing out on automatic promotion at the last minute.

Swindon had been relegated at the end of the previous season, but they had rebuilt over the summer, with the hiring of former West Ham star Paolo Di Canio making headlines.

In the first four games, neither team had ignited the world, even though we were billed as the preseason favourites.

Swindon had won one and lost three, while Salop had won one, drawn two, and lost one.

However, di Canio's team arrived in style in Shropshire, and Matt Ritchie, a potential star of the Premier League, gave them the lead in the 25th minute after headed home from a cross from Callum Kennedy.

Ben Smith did a fantastic job of blocking attempts from Raffaele De Vita and Leon Clarke as the Robins continued to control the first half.

However, his namesake in the Swindon goal was not doing as well. Early in the second half, Terry Gornell headed home to make it 1-1 after the Swindon custodian parried a Lionel Ainsworth shot into his path.

Throughout the second half, Town would keep applying more pressure, and with 19 minutes remaining, our perseverance finally paid off.

After turning Paul Caddis on the edge of the area, Lionel Ainsworth perfectly crossed the ball onto Marvin Morgan's head, who then flicked it in from six yards out.

each clubs would go on to win four of their next five games as a result of the outcome, which would set off a great run of form for each of them.
