"Depth, Farquharson, and Maher" Five lessons we took away from Stoke's Walsall cup exit

At the Bet365 Stadium on Tuesday, Walsall lost 4-3 on penalties to Championship team Stoke City, eliminating them from the EFL Cup in the opening round.

Jamie Donley, an attacker for Stoke, came closest for either team when he smashed an effort against the crossbar, but Mat Sadler's team held their hosts to a goalless stalemate.

Albert Adomah and Jonny Stuttle both missed in the shootout after having two consecutive chances in stoppage time, and they were eliminated from the competition.

These are the game's five key talking points. Farquharson is making a comeback.

Priestley Farquharson had a memorable evening after making his first competitive start in 353 days as a Walsall defender.

He played 74 minutes overall before limping away due to cramps, although he had a strong showing in the centre of defence.

Despite his injury-plagued start to his time at Walsall, perhaps this season will be the one when he can finally prove himself to the Bescot supporters.
