At Salford City, Accrington Stanley defeated 2-1 despite a penalty kick from Tyler Walton.
The Reds had a mountain to climb after the Ammies scored two goals in three minutes during the first half.
Sub Walton scored a late goal after Isaac Sinclair hit the woodwork for Stanley, but they were unable to overcome Peninsula Stadium.
Joe Bauress, a midfielder on loan from Burnley, was selected for his EFL and Stanley debut, while defender Benn Ward made his first start of the season after suffering an injury during preseason
Walton returned to the bench following a minor injury, while Charlie Brown and Kelsey Mooney were added to the starting lineup.
In addition to Donald Love, Logan Pye, Conor Grant, Ben Woods, Shaun Whalley, Josh Smith, Connor O'Brien, and Charlie Hall missing the game due to back injuries, Alex Henderson, who scored one goal and assisted on another in the Carabao Cup victory against Peterborough midweek, was also sidelined.
Salford had Rosaire Longelo, a former Stanley player, in queue. Freddie Sass's long throw caused some issues early on when Ward flicked one on that only required a touch.
With minimal goalmouth activity in the first twenty minutes, there wasn't much in it. Ben Woodburn got the ball in space 25 yards away, touched it, and blasted low into the bottom corner of the net to give Salford the lead at the 23-minute mark.
After Luke Garbutt's free kick went over the wall and into the net following a foul by Farrend Rawson on the area's perimeter, it was two minutes in.
Sinclair's 18-yard low shot beat goalie Matt Young on minute 33, but the ball struck the far post and bounced out for the defender to clear, making Stanley terribly unlucky.
As they attempted to increase their total, Jay Bird and Ade Oluwo were unable to locate the Ammies' goal.
With seven minutes remaining in the half, the Reds applied pressure, and Young made a great stop on Mooney's header.
Salford nearly scored a third goal after breaking quickly with Bird striking high, but Walton entered the game for the second half.
On the fifty-minute mark, Stanley had a fantastic opportunity when Sinclair drilled a ball across for Josh Woods, but the striker was unable to reach the target.
Salford had the ball in the net from a corner, but it was disallowed for a foul on Michael Kelly, while the Reds had a few goalmouth scrambles but were unable to capitalise.
With about 22 minutes remaining, Charlie Caton and Seamus Conneely entered the game, but the Ammies continued to pose a threat by hitting many balls into the box, with Kelly thwarting Ollie Turton.
Anjola Popoola contributed to the Reds' goal on 85 minutes after coming off the bench for the last 15 minutes.
He set up Walton, who was clipped in the area. Walton gave Stanley late hope by sending Young the wrong way from the penalty spot, but they were unable to equalise.
