"Vale is not in League One to'make up numbers'," said Moore.

Darren Moore, the manager of Port Vale, maintains that the team is not returning to League One "to make up the numbers" and that the promotion from the previous season serves as a "base layer" upon which the team must build.

After relegation at the end of 2023–24, Moore led Vale to second place in League Two the previous season, resulting in an instant return to the third division.

Moore told BBC Radio Stoke from the team's preseason training camp in Wales: "We start again with a fresh start after last season.

"The group is ready for it, but we need to press harder and ask more questions of everyone in League One. We are aware that we must exert more mental and physical effort. It has to do with alignment.

"We understand where we are and where we need to get to and that that will need a lot of hard work."

There's a genuine sense of "are we the finished article?' - no, we're nowhere near it."

"We're really pleased to be back competing in League One, but we're certainly not in League One just to make up the numbers." "Last season was like a base layer," he said.

"I spoke to the group and said the work that everyone put in last season was fantastic but the same level of effort for this season won't do. We need more."

It is an all-encompassing league.

They have "brought more competition" to the team and are comprehending "how we work and think and why we've brought them in," according to Moore, who has so far been in charge of seven new hires this summer.

According to the Vale manager, he is "constantly looking at the squad and the balance of it" in order to determine which areas can benefit from additional reinforcement.

"You look at the new players and ones already here and the synergy that they have and I've seen things already," he stated.

"I've observed both our strong points and areas for improvement. "But I'm warmed by what I've seen and we're just trying to squeeze every moment and take every opportunity."

First and foremost, Moore, who has managed and played in all four English divisions, will be working to keep Vale in League One and prevent a relegation battle.

However, he is certain that the team is ready to face that challenge in the third division.

"It's a league that's got everything," observed Moore. It has its rough and tumble, and we are aware that in order to compete, every player must be at the top of their game.

"That's the wonderful thing about League One - we know we can't afford to have any off days and that's wonderful mentally, to know we have to be at our best to get the right result."

On Saturday, August 2, Vale takes on Rotherham to start their League One campaign.

"Every game will pose a significant question, and we must be completely accurate in our work if we are to provide the answers.

League One will challenge us all to the utmost, which is why I adore it so much," Moore continued.

We want to be there, pushing ourselves every single week. As a football team, there is a lot to do to avoid being caught motionless, and that is what we are doing."
