Mat Sadler has urged Rico Browne, a defender for Walsall, to keep improving on his encouraging preseason results.
The 21-year-old made three appearances in the EFL Trophy last season but is still awaiting his league debut for the Saddlers.
Browne has been one of the most impressive players in preseason since joining Walsall in September 2024 after turning down a new contract with Birmingham.
Sadler is happy with his recent development and has given him the task of fulfilling his potential in the upcoming season.
Rico must 'keep backing himself'.
Mat Sadler, the manager of Walsall, has shown his faith in young defender Rico Browne, congratulating the 21-year-old on his strong preseason performances and encouraging him to make even more progress in the forthcoming season.
During Walsall's summer games, Browne, who joined the Saddlers last year following stints with Birmingham City and Forest Green Rovers, has drawn attention with a series of calm and confident back-row performances. Sadler has kept a careful eye on his progress and thinks the centre-back is beginning to reach his full potential.
Sadler remarked, "Rico has been outstanding in pre-season," "He is truly settling into his job and has absorbed everything. He has demonstrated the maturity, intelligence, and openness to learning that you look for in a young defender.
Sadler emphasised the value of depth and competitiveness in the team as Walsall looks to put up a bigger fight in League Two this year. The manager now has more defensive alternatives thanks to Browne's rise, which also boosts confidence for the next season.
"This season is a big one for Rico," Sadler continued. "He has accepted the task even though he is aware of it. He will be a vital member of our team if he keeps up this pace."
Every game seems to boost Browne's confidence, and his performances in friendlies have inspired supporters. Everyone will be watching to see if he can convert that form into competitive games as the league season approaches.
Next week, Walsall will play their first League Two match at home, and Browne will be looking to solidify his spot in the starting lineup.
