Don Goodman of Sky Sports thinks the Robins made a "brilliant" move by letting Emil Riis join Bristol City on a free transfer when he left Preston.
The Danish striker has ended a five-year tenure at Preston North End by agreeing to a three-year contract at Ashton Gate, following months of rumour surrounding his name.
The 27-year-old forward chose to start over in the southwest after being linked to Championship rivals Coventry City and Sheffield United.
Bristol City defeated competitors to acquire Riis.
Goodman was asked in an exclusive interview with Football League World if he was shocked that the Robins were able to sign the striker considering interest from teams with perhaps more recent experience.
"This is a fantastic addition to Bristol City. And, if I'm telling the truth, a surprise one," Goodman remarked.
It would be quite surprising if Emil Riis has joined Bristol City if teams like Coventry and Sheffield United were truly interested in him.
He is a coup, in my opinion. With all due respect to Bristol City, I'm shocked that they were able to convince him that this is the proper course of action.
since I give him a rating. He is, in my opinion, a very, very talented striker at the Championship level who could easily score 15 to 20 goals while wearing a Bristol City shirt the next season.
This is fantastic business on their part. As the Robins rebuild their front line, Riis is viewed as an improvement over Wells.
Arriving after Nahki Wells leaves, Riis will now join Fally Mayulu and Sinclair Armstrong in a reorganised offensive unit.
The Danish striker, who left Deepdale with 46 goals in 186 games, scored 12 goals in a Preston team that struggled for consistency last season.
"It is no secret how in demand Emil was, and we are very pleased to have secured his signature," said Brian Tinnion, technical director for Bristol City, who also voiced his happiness at the move.
He gives us more firepower and has a great deal of Championship experience. Riis, who started his career with Randers of the Danish Superliga, stated that the Ashton Gate project was a key factor in his choice.
He stated on the club's official website, "It is a club which has the right ambitions for me." I'm thrilled to be here, and I hope I can help realise the goal of taking things to the next level.
I want to contribute to the team by scoring goals. Riis might be the summer's biggest surprise because he already has Championship ambitions in his locker and is eager to establish himself at a new team.
