In a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers on Saturday afternoon, Gillingham's manager, Gareth Ainsworth, commended his team's spirit after they left Prenton Park with a point. Just after the hour, Joe Gbode equalised in stoppage time, negating Omari Patrick's first goal.
The tenacity with which his team persevered to the very end to guarantee that they left Birkenhead with a victory thrilled Ainsworth. The defensive alignment was altered, with Gillingham now using a back four.
Robbie McKenzie and Andy Smith formed the core of the defence, while Sam Gale started at right-back. Right winger Remeao Hutton was used in the game. Ainsworth gave an explanation for those choices.
Applauding the squad's mentality... This group's tenacity... In addition, they demonstrated perseverance and faith in order to score in the 92nd minute to tie the score and finish the match. It wasn't attractive.
We're not at home. I prepared to be reliable when I was away from home. This team beat Shrewsbury last week 4-0.
From here, I wanted to take something home. The fans were amazing.
I'm telling you. If I hadn't received my yellow card after five minutes, I would have been even more excited.
This set of players has me incredibly happy. Because Ethan Coleman is dedicated, we lost him to a huge gash on his face. Because Sam Gale is dedicated, we nearly lost him.
Due to his commitment, Elliott Nevitt is currently struggling because he hasn't completed a full preseason. We are an incredibly dedicated team, and we take great pride in our unity.
Fans, I am aware that we have likely played better football in the past, but the results have not been as good. I will get the results first, but you will get it and it will happen. I will acquire this resilience. You should be proud of it. We have to give it our all when they travel like they did.
The tank was drained..
It was definitely not a game for purists. The matchup pitted two teams that I believe will be good League Two teams this season against one another. They definitely do have some talented players. We observed them last week and decided that we must be strong against Tranmere in order to prevent them from tearing us apart the way they tore Shrewsbury apart. They are a terrific group.
No one has divided us. That's what I'm still saying. Nobody splits us up. I can accept it, even though it's a goal that arguably shouldn't have been permitted today.
They fail to realise that we will never give up. We're not going to give up. It was amazing to witness that in the end. I felt incredibly happy.
We most certainly earned something from today's match. I believe that the fact that we have something is justified. Andy Crosby is a wonderful manager and Tranmere is a strong team. Since taking over, Tranmere has had a great record. I'm going to enjoy that one tonight, and it's a wonderful point away from home.
Providing an explanation for the defensive form change... Omari Patrick is one of their better, more gifted players, in my opinion. Sam Gale's qualities, in my opinion, would have made him a better fit than Remeao Hutton. Additionally,
I believed that Remeao's skills would have allowed him to handle their left-sided centre half, Patrick Brough, who is a good attacker. It seems to work really well to me. I'm glad we did that because I felt Galey held him really well and Remeao did a fantastic job on Brough.
Towards Chesterfield in the future...
To play Chesterfield, we'll need to figure something out. They will be excellent. One of my best friends is Paul Cook. Even though they will be flying, I am already excited about it. On Tuesday, we'll see what we receive.
Possible business transfer...
I'll have a look at the entire team because I think we can strengthen ourselves by adding certain people to some important roles. I won't say it in the press. It's likely going to be two to add now, even though I always claimed it would only be one. It will be crucial that the appropriate players show up.
