Stoma-friendly restrooms are installed at the County Ground by Swindon Town.

At the Nigel Eady County Ground, Swindon Town Football Club has installed five Stoma-Friendly restrooms, marking a significant advancement in the accessibility and inclusivity of football. When attending games and events at the stadium, supporters who live with a stoma will feel supported and welcomed thanks to this significant gesture.

There are currently over 200,000 stoma users in the UK, with an estimated 750 in Swindon and 1,500 in Wiltshire. A stoma is a surgically made incision on the abdomen's surface that redirects the flow of pee or faeces. It is frequently required because of diseases including diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, bowel or bladder cancer, or abdominal trauma.

According to research by Colostomy UK, a lack of adequate lavatory facilities makes many stoma users feel socially ostracised. According to 62% of participants in the charity's Stoma Aware survey, this deficiency makes it more difficult for them to enjoy routine activities like going to events, shopping, or social gatherings. The Royal Society for Public Health reports that 20% of the general population has similar concerns, which is a much lower percentage.

Sadly, one in four respondents said they were afraid to use accessible restrooms because they had been verbally or physically abused in the past because their condition was hidden. Increased isolation and poor mental health may result from this persistent stigma and inaccessibility.

"It's wonderful to hear that Swindon Town has joined our Stoma Friendly Toilets campaign," said Giovanni Cinque, Marketing & Campaigns Manager at Colostomy UK, in response to the club's participation. Many of the things that most of us take for granted, like going to a football game, can be severely hampered by a lack of adequate facilities. Even though adding a hanger, shelf, bin, and full-length mirror might not seem like much, it will go a long way towards encouraging Wiltshire residents and those who live with stomas to attend a game at the County Ground.

By working with Colostomy UK, Swindon Town is exhibiting true leadership in accessibility and community inclusion. Regardless of medical needs, these five upgraded restrooms are a huge enhancement that will help ensure that everyone can feel safe and comfortable while supporting their team from the stands.
