Ryan Croasdale, a midfielder for Port Vale, is getting ready to play in League One for the first time and wants to disprove some sceptics.
The 30-year-old made 39 starts and played in every league game but one during the Valiants' promotion-winning campaign last season.
After 180 games over four seasons, Croasdale was released, despite having assisted Stockport County in moving up to the third division the previous season.
He told BBC Radio Stoke, "I want to take advantage of this opportunity to prove people wrong."
"I'm looking forward to it because I believe that no matter what kind of player you are, you're constantly trying to disprove managers or commentators who have said anything negative about you.
"There has always been that little bit of doubt, but even when I was at Stockport when they brought good players in and good midfielders in, I've always kept my shirt and I want to try and do that here."
Croasdale moved to Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer the following season after joining Preston as a trainee in 2013.
However, he did not play for Wednesday and had to wait until he was 27 years old to play for the Hatters in the English Football League.
"Up until Stockport I'd never played in the Football League, and then my first year we got to the play-off final, the second year we got promoted and then I came here and got promoted from League Two," he stated.
"So I'm looking forward to kicking on again and hopefully I'll take it in my stride."
