According to Sky Sports analyst Lee Hendrie, following back-to-back victories to start the new season, Barnsley's acquisition of David McGoldrick might make a big splash for the Tykes.
After defeating Plymouth Argyle 3-1 at Home Park on the first day of the League One season and winning all three points at home against Burton Albion at Oakwell thanks to a late goal from McGoldrick, Barnsley has now won two of its first two games.
With nearly 500 appearances in the Championship, League One, and League Two, as well as 63 Premier League games with Sheffield United, the 14-time Irish cap brings a plethora of experience to Barnsley.
The 37-year-old scored the game-winning goal from Adam Phillips' cross to complete Barnsley's comeback from a 2-0 deficit in their most recent match, and the Tykes are currently in second position in the League One standings, only behind Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town on goal differential.
'Clever' signing of McGoldrick by Barnsley:
Lee Hendrie's response McGoldrick's start to life in South Yorkshire has been fantastic, and he is now reuniting with former teammate and Barnsley boss Conor Hourihane.
In an exclusive interview with Football League World, Hendrie asserted that after McGoldrick's thrilling victory over Burton over the weekend and his immediate win over the Tykes supporters, Barnsley would be ecstatic to sign him.
"I think David McGoldrick will always score goals, there is no doubt about that, that's not just saying it for the sake of saying it," Hendrie stated.
"I have always considered him to be a bright football player, and what he did at [Notts] County last season was outstanding.
He is more than just a goal scorer; even at his age, he can contribute experience, slow down a game, and add the X-factor.
"His accomplishments throughout his career have consistently impressed me, and he has proven that he can score goals in crucial situations. "You can see it's a masterstroke.
Barnsley will be ecstatic that they signed him, in my opinion. I believed he would be a great addition to their team when they signed him, and they've already shown that they're off to a strong start.
"There is no denying that this could be a brilliant signing for the Tykes. As the season progresses, I believe we will continue to hear that McGoldrick will contribute to goals and assists.
There's no doubt of that because he is a clever, clever footballer."
For Barnsley, McGoldrick might be a key player in the forthcoming campaign.
Barnsley will be happy with how they and McGoldrick have begun and will be hoping to maintain this great momentum into the season.
The 34-year-old Hourihane, who is starting his first management position of his career at Barnsley, was instrumental in the Irish forward's choice to quit his boyhood club, Notts County, and move up to League One.
"I'm thrilled to be returning to Barnsley and reuniting with Conor."
When McGoldrick signed with the Tykes through Rob Staton on X, he stated, "This is a fantastic club with big ambitions, and I'm excited to be part of that journey."
After a lacklustre season the previous year, Barnsley will be hoping to challenge for the play-off spots, and McGoldrick, who already scored his first goal in Barnsley colours, will be eager to add as many as he can over the campaign.
Tonight's League Cup matchup pits the Tykes against League Two Fleetwood Town, who have won both of their opening two games.
